JAMESTOWN – A Jamestown Councilwoman is praising current efforts to reform the city’s police force following public input sessions last week.

The reform effort is taking place as part of an executive order issued in 2020 by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

During Monday’s city council meeting, Democratic Councilwoman Vickeye James expressed her thoughts on last week’s Zoom discussions with the community.

She says that the community and newly appointed Police Chief Tim Jackson are making strides in bridging a path forward.

“I think they were all very good. There was some great information gathered,” James said. “Community input was great. There was a few things in a few of them and Chief Jackson, to know, a lot of people are thinking on the same line of though you are on. We are in a good place, the City is, as far as the Executive Order from the Governor.”

James says that the Public Safety Committee did “a good job” at making sure those in the community, who normally don’t involve themselves in discussions, were able to voice their ideas.

Councilwoman At-Large Tamu Graham-Reinhardt (D), who was among those leading the public comment efforts, says that she hopes to reach out to Mayor Eddie Sundquist (D) and other officials this week to discuss the next steps in reviewing and releasing feedback from the community.
